Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 20

We’ve all thought about modernized versions of certain cars, but not so much like this.

Kinja'd!!!

What would a modern Duesenberg look like?

Like, if Duesenberg were still around, what would they be making?

Duesenberg would be making something that looks like recent Bentleys and RRs.

I think they’d be a lot like a Lexus LS with a large American engine under the hood. They were always pretty ostentatious cars for movie stars and the like. Virgil Exner (50’s/60’s design head of Chrysler) actually did retro versions of a few classic marques for Renwal, a model car company.

Here is his 1966 Deusenberg translated into real life:

Back then, 30’s luxury cars were cool. This started to really filter into production cars in the 70’s with landau tops, opera windows and upright grilles. This is why old guys put this stuff on their current cars- it was cool back in the day! Just imagine today’s “tuner” generation stancing their autonomous cars in 2053.

That’s not a Duesenburg. It’s a Chrysler and you know it!

It may have been based on a Chrysler, but it was meant as a sort of concept car.

It was meant as a slap in the face to the Duesenberg name.

I’d love to see a modern take on the Mormon Meteor. Maybe a 900 c.i. twin/quad turbo falconer V-12.

Every time a Duesenberg revival has been attempted it’s been half-assed. The only possible way to make a Duesenberg today would be on a bespoke chassis with a proprietary engine and drivetrain, and then to offer several bodywork options to each owner. You would order a chassis (e.g. # of doors, cylinders, RWD/AWD) and then take it to the body shop to design your coachwork. Basing a Duesenberg off an existing car (granted a nice existing car) was a disservice to the Duesenberg name.

But a lot more ostentatious.

A Duesenberg was something else.

I’m not saying it was a viable production car; it’s just a vision of what it might have looked like back then. Surely Ex didn’t intend to offend the Duesenberg name.

It was not intended I’m sure, but it did.
